For contributions to expand the influence of technology and to improve the ecosystem of the global semiconductor industry

Sung Wook Park joined SK Hynix as an engineer in 1984 and worked there for 40 years. He became the head of SK Hynix Research Center in 2003, leading the company’s research, development, and manufacturing efforts. In 2010, he advanced to Chief Operating Officer and subsequently took on the role of CEO in 2013. Under his leadership, SK Hynix successfully launched four new Fabs and pioneered the world’s first 20nm LPDDR4. This accomplishment paved the way for the development of the world’s highest capacity DRAM and the most advanced layer 3D NAND products. By 2018, SK Hynix had ascended to the number three position in the semiconductor industry. In 2000, Hynix encountered severe financial challenges amid the IMF crisis. However, under the technical guidance of Park, the company experienced a remarkable recovery through the timely market introduction of new products. Another significant financial trial emerged in 2008 during the global financial crisis, but once again, under Park’s technical leadership, the company overcame the crisis. Park focused on expanding collaborations with universities, supporting the development of semiconductor talent, and funding semiconductor research in academic institutions. Additionally, during his three-year tenure as President of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA), he made substantial contributions to enhancing the global semiconductor industry ecosystem, not only in Korea but on a global scale. His creativity and innovation have been key drivers in supporting the evolution of semiconductor technology and enabling SK Hynix to become a globally competitive company. Park has had a tremendous impact on the engineering community—and society as a whole—through his numerous achievements, and he more than exemplifies the qualities of an IEEE Honorary Member.

Park is a Management Consultant, SK Hynix, Seoul, Republic of Korea.
