IEEE JOSEPH F. KEITHLEY AWARD IN INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENT

Sponsored by Keithley Instruments, a Tektronix company, and the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society

“For contributions to photonics-based optical frequency and wavelength domain instrumentation and measurement.”

The world sees better thanks to Deepak G. Uttamchandani. His invention of optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) interferometry led to the development of new healthcare instrumentation based on photonics, including commercial eye-scanners that deliver detailed retinal images. These images enable early detection of the retinal disorders that cause visual impairment in up to 21% of the global population by age 40. The technologies he created are also vital in many other areas, including the high-precision testing of key components in optical telecommunications networks, and the ground-testing and in-orbit monitoring of space structures. Uttamchandani has made an impact throughout society: as broad as networks reach, as high as humans fly, and as far as the eye can see.

An IEEE Life Fellow, Uttamchandani is Associate Dean Strategy, Faculty of Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
