2024 IEEE President's Award

Each year the IEEE Awards Board recommends a select group of recipients to receive IEEE’s most prestigious honors. These are individuals whose exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, and the engineering profession.

The IEEE President’s Award is given to individuals, not necessarily members of IEEE, whose careers have exhibited distinguished leadership and contributions to the public. To those recipients not already members of IEEE, this recognition shall carry an entitlement of the privileges of IEEE except the right to vote and hold office therein.

Gladys B. West

“For mathematical modeling and development of satellite geodesy models that played a pivotal role in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS).”

TFA Spotlight: Tsunenobu Kimoto

Tsunenobu Kimoto is the world’s leading scientist in the field of SiC, a wide-bandgap semiconductor material that, due to its high critical electric field and other superior properties, significantly outperforms conventional semiconductors. The revolution in power electronics is based almost entirely on the achievements of Kimoto, who established the core technologies and physics in the field. Without his work on SiC materials, processing, and device design, the vast amount of electric power now being saved would not be possible.

Kimoto is receiving the 2024 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award “for contributions to silicon carbide material and power devices.”

A special thank you to the award’s sponsor, IEEE Electron Devices Society.

Tsunenobu Kimoto will be presented with the award at the IEEE 36th International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs (ISPSD) on 3 June in Bremen, Germany.
